ITV breakfast presenter Lorraine Kelly has such a reputation for being friendly and warm on screen, that the TV host managed to win an entire tax case based on the fact that she doesn’t play herself, but a ‘chatty’ version of ‘Lorraine’ in front of the cameras.
So plenty of eyebrows were raised this week when Kelly was introduced live on air to the Tory leadership contender Esther McVey, who worked with Kelly on GMTV in the past, and could barely muster a smile for her former colleague. Asked if she remembered McVey, Kelly curtly replied: ‘Yes. Yes I do.’ Before quickly moving the conversation on.

Asked about the incident afterwards at a Bruges Group event, Esther McVey suggested that her own promotion, and the fact that they shared a dressing room at GMTV, might be to blame for the pair’s less than amicable conversation on television.
It appears though that dressing room spats weren’t really the cause of Kelly’s anger. Asked about the incident on ITV this morning, Kelly tore into McVey and the ‘whole toxic political atmosphere’, revealing that she ‘strongly disagree[d]’ with McVey on LGBT rights, and had simply ‘had enough of this.’

If McVey caused the ever-cheerful breakfast host to crack, Mr S wonders what effect she’ll have on the rest of the country…
