Coffee House shots: Have ‘Remain’ done enough to win?

We’re in the final days of campaigning before the country goes to the polls on Thursday. But what is the mood like in both the ‘Leave’ and ‘Remain’ camps? James Forsyth says on today’s Coffee House Shots podcast that he thinks the ‘Remain’ camp are feeling fairly confident. Speaking to Isabel Hardman, he says:

‘Remain are certainly more relaxed than they were this time last week. They feel that they have the economy front and centre. They are very encouraged by these polls which show people are concerned about the effect of Brexit on their personal finances. On the ‘Leave’ side, I think they feel that because this is so much of a turnout game, they are still in it. The ‘Leave’ view has always been that if the polls are level on polling day, they will win, because their voters are so much more determined to turn out.’

Fraser Nelson joins Isabel and James on the podcast. He says:

‘The break in campaigning has been to the net disadvantage to the leave campaign. This hurt the ‘Leave’ campaign for two reasons: firstly, their campaigning is far more door-to-door than ‘Remain’, so they lost groundwork they had been doing to get out the vote. The other thing is that part of their message had been an ‘anti-politics’ message. They had been tapping into that quite successfully. After the tragic murder of Jo Cox, that has really changed the mood. And nobody would play the anti-politics card now. This is a wonderful but very rare moment where people don’t see politicians as the enemy and this deprives ‘Leave’ of part of the attraction of the ‘Leave’ vote.’
