We’ve now finished the Spectator’s Parliamentarian of the Year awards, and have moved up to the bar. There were two big surprises this afternoon. The first was the quality of Theresa May’s jokes (below).
The second was Ed Miliband’s acceptance speech – which even had Boris Johnson (who was presenting the gongs) laughing. The Leader of the Opposition can crack semi-decent gags – who knew?
(PS I can hear CoffeeHousers now saying it’s not funny. And I confess: that’s what I thought when I first heard it – that he went on for far too long. But like Petra Mede in this year’s Eurovision, he judged his audience perfectly. Everyone was in fits. And I was right in my analysis of his speech: it was crazy 1970s socialist stuff. But, I hate to admit, it was horribly effective.)
