The Spectator Parliamentarian of the Year Awards winners

The Spectator Parliamentarian of the Year Awards bash took place this evening, CoffeeHousers, and a jubilant time was had by all. We shall be putting out a supplement celebrating the event, and
Parliament’s most preeminent performers, in tomorrow’s issue of The Spectator. But, in the meantime, here’s the list of all the winners from tonight:

Baroness Shirley Williams is an outstanding choice for Parliamentarian of the Year: she speaks from the floor of the Lords, Question Time, any podium, really, on a wide variety of topics, with such depth, knowledge, and expertise, from issues ranging from nuclear weapons to healthcare, eequally comfortable with complex foreign debates and domestic challenges…. and never from a prepared speech, ever. And never dull, always witha twinkle in her eyes. What a role model.

Michael Gove? Really?? What does it say about the UK that we can award Minister of the Year to someone who has delayed a major piece of strategic planning again and again for many months, causing extreme distress to an entire profession?

Hmm, not much need for me to add to the why-Shirley-Williams-should-not-get-any-award-ever chorus, here and especially on Guido Fawkes, save to say that Shirl herself considers her position as elder stateswoman, sage, grandee, leading poilitical thinker, beneficial revolutionary outsider, and all-round good-thing, richly deserved. Unfortunately her track record entirely fails to back it up.

Here’s a thought, there isn’t any chance that Chris Huhne is the son she gave up for adoption is he, they have so much in common.

Why? It would be good to have a short para. Awards may be obvious to Spectator consideration panel, but not all are able to be viewed so by outsiders. What speech did Charles Walker make that was so brilliant, for example.

I assume Williams gets the nod for her effective railroading of the NHS bill, which is very magnanimous of you. However, this award lost any cache it ever had when you gave it to Blair, a man who, for all his many gifts, had complete contempt for parliament.
