From the AP:
The son of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is preparing for deployment to Iraq next year.
Capt. Beau Biden, a Judge Advocate General in the Delaware National Guard and the state’s attorney general, is part of the 261st Signal Brigade that has been told to prepare for duty in Iraq in 2008. They have not been given a date of deployment yet.
"I don’t want him going," Delaware Sen. Joe Biden said from the campaign trail Wednesday, according to a report on Radio Iowa. "But I tell you what, I don’t want my grandson or my granddaughters going back in 15 years and so how we leave makes a big difference."
As GFR points out, that’s a bit different from Mitt Romney’s sons serving their country by selling Mormonism.
But enough of policy…
Biden named his son Beau? Beau Biden! That’s so brilliantly preposterous it becomes almost charming. Just the sort of thing, in fact, to bolster my quiet pro-Bidenism*. I mean, here’s a question for you folks, is Beau Biden the name of:
a) an Edwardian racehorse
b) an upscale brand of gentleman’s shaving cream
c) one of Errol Flynn’s carousing buddies
d) a rare type of carnation
UPDATE: Commenter Keith tells me that Biden Jr is actually called Joseph Robinette Biden III (I could have checked this? Er, yes.) but that he "incomprehensibly" prefers to be called Beau. So, OK, technically Biden Sr didn’t pick the name, which is a shame. But its still pretty fab.
*Based on the fact that he’d be the most entertaining President, while doing somewhat less damage than would his rivals. Not that it counts for anything since, of course, he got no hope.Tags: Democrats, Iraq
