Why does the left care more about Islamophobia than anti-Semitism?

Why do leftists care more about Muslims than they do about Jews? If that sounds confrontational, consider this: this week, the Met Police released the latest hate-crime figures for London. They show that offences against Jews have risen by 93% over the past year, while offences against Muslims have risen by 70%. And guess which story the BBC, Guardian and Independent, those voices of the British liberal conscience, have chosen to flag up? Yep, the 70% hike in Islamophobic attacks, not the nearly 100% hike in anti-Semitic offences.

The BBC’s headline is ‘Islamophobic crime in London “up by 70%”‘. The Guardian‘s is ‘Hate crimes against Muslims soar in London’. The Indie opts for ‘Hate crimes against Muslims in London “up by 70%”‘. What about the crimes against Jews? Sorry, no room for those. They aren’t mentioned. Whether as a result of how the cops chose to press-release their new figures or how editors chose to interpret them, or maybe a bit of both, someone down the line has taken the decision that a bashed-up or verbally abused Muslim is more newsworthy than a bashed-up or verbally abused Jew.

This is becoming increasingly common. For some reason, so-called progressives, especially those of a leftist bent, are made more upset by hatred of Muslims than they are by hatred of Jews. It’s why the very people – Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, Diane Abbott, every leftie on Twitter – who normally rail against racism, and against the people who rub shoulders with racists, could in essence say ‘What’s all the fuss?!’ when it was revealed Jeremy Corbyn had been hanging out with Holocaust deniers.

[Alt-Text]

It’s why every bovine attack on a mosque is held up as hard evidence that Europe is descending into a cesspool of anti-Muslim hatred, whereas you have to scour the media to find mentions of attacks on synagogues. In recent days, a Manchester teen was beaten up in a suspected anti-Semitic assault; a Jewish Spanish teenager was physically attacked; and two Holocaust survivors in Amsterdam were assaulted and called ‘dirty Jews’. Yet these incidents aren’t frontpage news; certainly they aren’t cited as evidence that a new plague of prejudice is stalking Europe, as is done when Muslims are assaulted. The message of this double standard, however implicit it might be, is pretty clear: attacks on Jews are less important than attacks on Muslims.

The extent to which chattering-class concern for Muslims trumps concern for Jews reached its nadir when four Jews were murdered in a Parisian deli shortly after the massacre at Charlie Hebdo. Pretty much every liberal newspaper in Europe continued thundering on about the potential for an ‘Islamophobic backlash’ following the Charlie killings, even as Jews were being killed. On the morning the four dead Jews were being put on a flight for burial in Israel, George Clooney was telling fawning hacks how worried he was about ‘anti-Muslim fervour’ in Europe. It’s surreal. Some people seem more worried about possible attacks on Muslims than by actual attacks on Jews.

And now, a hike in anti-Muslim crimes in London is given greater media prominence than a larger hike in anti-Jewish attacks. This implicit demotion of Jewish problems, this judgement that crimes against Jews aren’t all that serious, needs some explanation. I think there are two reasons for it.

The first is that flagging up attacks on Muslims allows the left to indulge some prejudices of their own, especially about the dumb, tabloid-reading hordes, whom they view as being one iffy Richard Littlejohn column away from organising a demented anti-Muslim pogrom. The liberal elite’s myopic focus on Islamophobia is really an expression of distrust for the insufficiently multicultural, apparently Western-centric masses.

The second reason is that many on the left seem to think anti-Semitism is politically justified. From Karen Armstrong’s insistence that the deli attack in Paris ‘had nothing to do with anti-Semitism’ and rather was ‘about Palestine’ to various commentators’ claims that anti-Semitism in Europe is the inevitable byproduct of Israel’s antics in the Middle East, many very respectable people now view assaults on Jews almost as a form of protest, as political rather than hateful.

That’s the terrifying message of the media and leftists’ implicit downgrading of the seriousness of anti-Semitism. Whether they’re excusing these crimes or simply acquiescing to them, they’re giving a green light to anti-Semitism.

Muslims are viewed by today’s Left as the non-white underdog, while somehow Jews are the white oppressors lumped together with the U.S. Never mind that 1) not all Muslims are non-white, 2) Jews and Arabs originate from the same region and 3) Hitler hardly considered Jews to be white. This Leftist argument crumbles in the face of Israel’s 51% Mizrachi (Middle Eastern) Jewish population as well as the thousands of Mizrachim living in Diaspora.

Did anyone look at the stats that O’Neill cites? I think he’s off by 10. http://www.met.police.uk/crimefigures/#

I care about all hate crime. Its wrong to suggest one kind is worse or more important than another. Anti-Semitic attacks and abuse are real and too prevalent. Islamophobia attacks and abuse are real and too prevalent. Both need to be prevented through education. Both need to be discouraged and punished through the criminal justice system. There may be some similar factors and some different factors that lead to different hate crimes, but there is no excuse for any hate crime. There is no hierarchy of oppression.

Yes, because if there’s one thing our mass media needs to do more of, it’s dedicate column inches to the 0.4% of the population who, coincidentally, own it. Too much White and Moslem privilege up in here! Stop the hatred, media! Write some more articles about the suffering of Jews! Don’t you see how unhappy this is making our resident Chosen people, as they flee to Israel before the Happening comes forth?

    • http://quiettowers.wordpress.com/ InRussetShadows

You missed the point. I am not surprised. It is strange how a rise in anti-semitism is ignored. Why do you think that is? And if the Jews own/control the media, don’t you think it would be at least acknowledged? If a few sentences can reveal the gaping holes in your ideology, maybe it’s time to take down light-up swastika you have above your bed.

    • freddie987654321

By attacking an article over it’s opinion regarding anti-semitism and the lack of it’s reporting and then subsequently revealing intrinsically anti-semitic views is hardly endearing toward your argument. Also, if the press were to be owned by Jews, don’t you think that if they were so intent upon controlling society that all of the papers would be reporting the rise of anti-semitism over the rise of islamophobia? I know that this comment won’t make a difference to the way that you think, but at the very least just think about what you’ve said and the contradictions inherent in your point.

Here in the US jews are the majority victims of religious hate crimes… they comprise 62% of religious hate crimes… vs 14% for muslims… these are facts… they are not debatable… your answer of conspiracies about how jews seem to rule the world are more telling of your bias than the actual numbers of hate crimes taking place… but once agian you make the point that the world should not care when a jew is killed because according to you they are so “privileged”

I think you’ll find the ‘left’ cultural masters have made it their sole aim to make Hitler the greatest cartoon demon imaginable (as have the cuckservative leaders). Can’t think why.

Because it is true. The left opposes anyone who has a power source other than government. So atheist fallen Jews (Lenin) are good; religious, actual Jews are bad, as are Christians, conservatives, libertarians, even DIY hippies. The left thus has always viewed Jews as simply useful idiots that they can use/mine to get votes, but if a more exploitable victim class comes along, then of course they will jump ship and they have.

If all the land in England ( In mid-2013 the population density of England was 413 people per sq km Source: ONS ) – now the most densely populated country in Europe – was divided up – each person would receive a patch of land just 161ft by 161ft. (1 Sq KM/413 = 2,421.3m2 of which Sq root = 49.2m2 = 161.4ft)

Thats just over half the size of a soccer pitch. (and that includes wilderness areas such as the moors, parks, beaches etc…)

That half of a soccer pitch has to take care of all their needs and wants. To house them, water and feed them, treat their sewage, absorb all the rubbish, produce all their energy, and produce all the goods they need from furniture to computers.

Is England full? Why doesn’t this magazine do an article on this?

Anti-semitism is a mental illness. It is much more worthy of the suffix ‘phobia’ that concern about millitant Islam. I have a colleague who in many ways is very sensible, just don’t get him started on the subject of the Jews. And so often on discussion boards such as this, very many contributors suddenly start to try to drag the Jews in as the sinister manipulators of every woe in the world.
I fear that there could be another wholesale massacre of Jewish people in the next 100 years. And people will look back aghast and say ‘how could they let that happen’?
Well ask my colleague. And Corbyn. And Abbott. And Armstrong.
“It’s all Israel’s fault”, they’ll say, “they brought it on themselves.”
Isn’t that what anti-semites always say? “If only they wouldn’t be so Jewish, we wouldn’t have to hate them.”

  • Metatrona

The answer to that is because Jews are ethical and Muslims are sadistic terrorists. They are afraid to antagonize Muslims.

  • vsevolod4

Well, the Spectator title itself shows the asymmetry, by using a bogus non-word “Islamophobia.” There is no such word. There is anti-Islamism — that would be the analogue to anti-Semitism.
For there to be a “-phobia” there needs to be an irrational fear. There is nothing irrational about worrying about being killed or converted by Islamists.

“… meanwhile, 80% + acts of religious hatred in this world of ours are directed against Christians and Christianity.”

I cannot disagree with you here, because the data supports this (the almost complete exodus of ancient Christian communities in the Middle East, in North Africa, in Pakistan, Nigeria, attacks on Copts in Egypt, etc.), but the article discusses the situation in the UK and Europe where Christians are not really a target of persecution and hatred. I am sure there are cases, and the number of those will probably rise with the forced cultural enrichment we have to endure, and a few hundred ISIS fighters may have slipped through the cracks as well, but for now the biggest problem for Christianity here is probably disinterest.

  • StephanieJCW

    Impressive whataboutery.

  • Xaider

It’s evident by just looking at the likes of The Guardian too.

All the Christian articles have very staunch opposition and offensive tones towards Christianity.

If you copy & pasted their comments which the left mass up-vote onto an Islam article, you’d be shunned, the comment would be deleted and your account potentially set to ‘moderation’.

They literally shake in their boots at the thought of saying anything against Islam.

  • MarkY

The Left doesn’t care about either group, they only pretend to care, paying lip service to any group they can attract as converts and voters. The Left in the West initially pretend-supported Jews to get them as a reliable voting block. In the U.S., once the Jews where donating and voting solidly and reliably for the Democrats, the Democrats turned their backs on them and are now courting the Muslims. The Left will support anything and everything as long as they can use it as a wedge issue to get power, always sweetening the deal by redistributing other people’s money. As soon as a specific group is no longer important for political gain, the Left will move on. Watch out gays, you are now being replaced by trans, and trans, you will be be replaced by zoos. Remember when the Left supported the rights of the accused? Now they don’t give a crap about that. It’s all about the alleged rape culture, and anyone accused of rape or sexual touching is as good as guilty, but hey, they figure that will get them support from women, a larger voting block. When Climate Change (the former Global Warming) ceases to be an issue the Left can use to get more power, it will cease to exist.

    • Kate S.

“It’s all about the alleged rape culture, and anyone accused of rape or sexual touching is as good as guilty, but hey, they figure that will get them support from women, a larger voting block.”

About two months ago, I had an interesting exchange with an acquaintance about sexual assault and rape. I was torn to pieces for stating that everybody should use common sense to avoid dangerous situations, and that it really infantilises women when you constantly make them out as helpless victims who cannot and should not be in charge of their own safety. I also clearly stated that acting responsibly and learning from mistakes does not in any way mean victim-blaming; it just means recognising that we don’t live in a perfect world. BTW, I fully support harsh penalties and criminal convictions for rape and sexual assault.

This morning, I read on Facebook that a friend of this acquaintance was sexually molested (no name was mentioned to protect her privacy). I expressed my sincere sympathy and then withdrew from active commenting, but continued reading. I eventually learned that she was molested by two men of “Asian background”, and this is where it got interesting: the tenor of the comments was “well, you have to understand that they come from a different culture, you should not provoke them, and perhaps she dressed in a way that made her look like a prostitute to them”. And this from the people who loudly protested not even ten weeks ago that it never matters what a woman wears, where she is at what time and in what company, whether she is drunk, on drugs or sober! I am sorely tempted to quote their own comments back at them just to see what kind of reaction I’ll get.

A few days ago I suggested that people like that should be called turncoats. I now think that’s too mild.

  • richard40

What I cant comprehend is why any Jew in the US today still supports a pro Islamicist left that is obviously out to destroy them. It is like they have some sort of death wish, or perhaps Stockholm Syndrome. Either that or perhaps they are no longer really Jews, just leftists. Of course once the leftists allied with the Islamicists completely take over, and the pograms start again (except this time against both Christians and Jews), they will find out they are Jews after all, just like the German Patriot Jews in Germany did.

    • Richard

When it comes to politics, people are irrational. A man I know in London is concerned about immigration, for instance, which we all know exploded under Labour. Yet he will vote Labour because he thinks it is “anti-Toff” and “Toffs are the enemies of Britain” and so on. Quite intelligent otherwise, he is, but that is simply the reality of political man.

  • woocane

It’s pretty easy to explain– most of the left is heavily anti-Semitic. Since they hate Jews too, attacks against Jews don’t bother them.

  • http://www.noneofyourbusiness.net Arminius

“Why does the left care more about Islamophobia than anti-Semitism”?

    Simple. Because they hate Jews.
Oh, and because they’re historical illiterates. But mainly, because they hate Jews.

  • Hugo Van Schandevijl

As long as the Jewish community refuses to make a distinction between Israeli and

Jewish, as long as attacking the Israeli apartheid politics in Palestine is equalled with anti Semitism, all statistics are suspect…It is like calling all Anti Apartheid activists of 20 years ago communist West-haters.
So the answer to the titles question: “Why does the left care more about Islamophobia than anti-Semitism?” is simple: it does not! It does however NOT share your definition of Anti Semitism.

    • Kate S.

Of course, this begs the question how does the left define anti-Semitism? I gather from your statement that the left does not view an attack against a Jewish person as anti-Semitic, whilst an attack against a Muslim is automatically seen as a sign of “Islamophobia”. Did I understand you correctly?

    • Are You Sure

It isn’t the Jewish community that refuses to make a distinction between being Jewish and being Israeli.

I am English. I am also Jewish. I am not Israeli.

      All pretty simple stuff.

      • Kate S.

Yes! I agree. That’s why I asked him how the left defines anti-Semitism. I don’t expect to hear anything back from Hugo. A few people amongst my circle of acquaintances have espoused similar views, and whenever I flat-out asked them how they would define anti-Semitism (e.g., does it require the presence of concentration camps and orchestrated persecution and roundups?!?) I got blank stares and/or some garbled nonsense about Israel being responsible. Honestly, I couldn’t make heads or tails of it.

        • Are You Sure

The worst thing is when they say, “we don’t mean you, you’re different”.

To expect Jews from anywhere, to oppose israel, the only jewish nation on earth, that will always give them a home and shelter and safety, and that fights for its’ survival since the first day of its’ creation, is actually distasteful. These are the same people who will say nothing once all their Jews are fleeing from Muslims – to Israel!
Israel’s existence is non negotiable, BECAUSE of people like that.
They prove it every time they open their mouths. We should be grateful.

    • Sunshine Sux

      Fcuk off!

We’re supposed to believe in some mythical peaceful majority when it comes to islam, even though there is the exact contrary evidence for this, but Jews get attacked simply for Israel defending its’ people?

As I said earlier: fcuk off.

      • Hugo Van Schandevijl

          • Sunshine Sux

I believe Muslims are Nazis. They admired Hitler, and vice versa, Mein Kampf is a bestseller across the MENA region and in muslim Asia. Makes sense to me. They are also the ones who can not live in peace with anybody, including their own. But you will see this for yourself, sooner than you think. Just don’t ask ‘Nazis’ Israel for the Iron Dome, once, home made rockets start raining over your cities, from Tower Hamlets, cheers. Ask the Palesrtinians for help 😀

p.s.: people such as yourself only prove why Israel’s existence is non negotiable, I thank you for that.

          • Kate S.

You still haven’t answered my question. You stated that the left doesn’t share “your definition of anti-Semitism”. I am genuinely curious to learn how the left, or even just you, does define anti-Semitism!

    • Richard

Is the article not about increased attacks on Jews not being reported, whilst the attacks on Muslims are being reported? I don’t see how Israel or ISIS or anything else is relevant.

      • Sunshine Sux

to Jew haters Israel is always relevant, especially when talking about Muslims tribal warring, and how nobody kills more muslims than other muslims, and nobody ever has, for the last 1400 years 😉

  • Phil

It’s because progressives are gutless and they understand full well that the Muslims will seek them out and kill them over a cartoon drawing. And then they put their friends and families at the same risk if they so much as criticize the religion of peace for murdering people.
Christians & Jews however will look at things like cartoons or insults about them and just shrug their shoulders and move on with their lives.

  • Suzyqpie

Muslim internecine tribal warfare has raged on, in varying degrees of intensity, since the 7th century resulting in, naturally, the total debris field that is Islam. Wherever Muslims go they will continue the internecine tribal warfare.

    • A Smith

There’s an Arab component to that–Muslims in Indonesia are somewhat less tribalistic (and therefore less violent).

    • Kate S.

Is anybody else wondering how long it will take until fights erupt between the newly arrived Arabs and the more established Turks in Germany? Frictions, which is putting it mildly, between these two ethnic groups have existed for a very long time — all the way back to the 7th century — and it’s well known that people do not just put their conflicts aside in a new environment, as Merkel and Co. seem to naively believe, but bring them along where they are waiting to come to the surface again.

In 2008, the German newspaper “Der Tagesspiegel” published an article about brutal fights between Arabs and Turks in Berlin’s Neukoelln area where various Middle East conflicts are reenacted on a smaller scale 24/7. The article concluded with the statement by a 42-year-old migrant who blamed the problems on the Germans for not wanting to send their children to school with Arabs and Turks, and for not integrating in Berlin-Neukoelln!

      I find it rather prophetic.

  • sensoria

Leftists like to demonstrate their moral superiority and open-mindedness by publicly decrying crimes against “the other.” Then they get to trumpet to the other side how racist or homophobic or transphobic or whatever they are for pointing out things like the rise in crimes against Jews. It’s win/win. Jews are just whiners to the left. I can’t believe so many of them are actually leftists themselves.

  • A Smith

Because Islam is, at its core, a totalitarian ideology. So it is harmonious with the Left’s goals.

This past weekend, I watched a very interesting ZDF TV (German public station) documentary online. It’s entitled: “Ein Staat – zwei Welten? Einwanderer in Deutschland” or “One state – two worlds? Immigrants in Germany”. In the beginning the reporter visits a school in southern Germany where she speaks to a few Muslim boys (aged 14 or 15). They tell her squarely that the German constitution does not really matter to them, that they do not respect/accept the equality of the sexes, view women as a second-class citizens, Jews as pigs, and homosexuals as subhuman.

Later, there is an interview with Jewish Rabbi Daniel Alter in Berlin who was beaten up for wearing his yarmulke in public. It starts at 18:55 for those who are interested and understand German.

You can view it here: http://www.zdf.de/zdfzoom/ein-staat-zwei-welten-einwanderer-in-deutschland-39881050.html

I would say that History books will say that the Left was responsible for the destruction of the great Western Empire but I regret to say it will simply state that the Great Allah and his fearless Mujahideen slaughtered the unclean infidel in heir beds after exploiting their weak “Jew loving” values against them.

Who gets blamed for the destruction of Constantinople?

No one. Despite the the fact that the city was founded as a Christian and as a European city by Constantine the Great, today its Christian past is forgotten, despite that fact that it was Christian for its first thousand years, and most people believe that it was always Muslim and middle eastern. Likewise, in the future people will always assume Europe was Muslim.

What about the hate crimes against whites, which far out-number those against either Muslims or Jews? And of course, those committing hate crimes against Jews are overwhelmingly from the same Religion of Peace as those whom the Chief Rabbi et al want us to welcome into Europe.

    Meanwhile, in Israel:

Israel began construction of a fence along its border with Jordan on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced at a weekly cabinet meeting. “Today, we are starting to build a fence on our eastern border,” he said Sunday.

“In the first stage, we will build it from Timna to Eilat in order to protect the airport being built there, and we will continue the fence up to the Golan Heights, where we have already built a strong security fence.”

“To the extent that it is possible we will encompass Israel’s borders with a security fence and barriers that will allow us to control our borders,” Netanyahu said. “We will not allow Israel to be flooded with illegal migrants and terrorists.”

What is left out of all this is why so many of my Jewish friends in the US are desperate to vote with the leftists. So, in a sense, it’s hard to feel sorry for Jews in this situation because so many of them avidly support and vote with the leftists. Just look at all the support that Obama gets, maybe 80% of all Jewish votes. And Obama sells Israel down the river on the Iran deal and Jews go nuts to support him? And probably 80% of Jews will vote for Sanders or Clinton next year, politicians who openly side with Iran.

It’s a heck of lot easier to support people who actively defend their interests is all I gotta say!
