Former Newsnight correspondent Paul Mason seems rather happy to be free of Auntie, especially since the Scottish independence referendum campaign sent the establishment to panic stations: ‘Not since Iraq have I seen BBC News working at propaganda strength like this. So glad I’m out of there,’ he writes on his Facebook page, to the consternation of former colleagues. ‘It’s on my friends-only Facebook page so not meant as any great statement other than weariness,’ Mason tells Mr S, ‘it says what it says.’ Lucky, then that he is now at Channel Four News – that famed bastion of slant free news.

Mason has frequently been caught yith his pants down when it comes to reporting his bias without fact checks and without letting the other side speak.

    He’s a poor excuse for a journalist.

  • wattys123

mason is a Marxist and pro-mass immigration nut job ideal for Both BBC and C4.

  • Jambo25

If anyone thinks that the BBC are bad just get a load of the Daily Mail. Over the last 2 days we’ve had a very unpleasant anti-Scottish article by the lovely Simon Heffer (So nothing unusual there.) and one today by some scumbag called John Stevens who claims Salmond and Sturgeon are only against the Union because they are childless and therefore selfish. No, I’m not kidding.
This second article is so bad that most of the BTL comments are disapproving but there are still some which are approving and truly vile.

    • GraveDave

The Daily Mail calls itself right wing but it’s pre moderation and successive comment intake is fluffier than even the Guardian. It’s a wind up paper.
Geared only to get peoples hackles up. They also helped create the
      Cult of Doreen Lawrence.

    • Ridcully

In fairness, the Mail stated on its front page that the SImon Heffer article didn’t reflect the views of the paper as a whole.

  • Malcolm McCandless

The BBC damned by one of their own. He is only saying what many in Scotland have known since 2007 when the SNP became the Scottish government. The BBC are the media’s equivalent of the Orange Order.

    top man

  • The Masked Marvel

This isn’t the first time Paul Mason, Newsnight’s former “It’s All Kicking Off” editor, slagged off the BBC for propaganda or taking sides on an issue.

@ravmattu @PJHarveyUK @BBCr4today two words: Gaza Flotilla – on balance yes; the whole truth— Paul Mason (@paulmasonnews) January 2, 2014

Of course, the BBC does have a vested interest in maintaining the Union. The licence fee loss won’t be all that much, but it will kill them to lose a territory and the ability to control the news agenda. The BBC follow their own version of America’s Manifest Destiny. Auntie’s tentacles must be everywhere, at all times, and having this one cut off will hurt.

    • Martin Jennerson

Great post – “it’s all kicking off” sums up Mason’s idiotic reports, which are always heavily editorialised and often seem like very childish and naive attempts at agitation.

      • The Masked Marvel

All one needs to know about Paul Mason’s ideology and attitude can be found in the following twitter exchange with Laurie Penny:

And this endorsement of her, posted on her own blog:

“Penny is re-inventing the language of dissent, delivering verbal
taser-barbs to the left and right, and causing apoplexy among the old
men in cardigans who run the British blogosphere.” – Paul Mason, BBC

This is the man the BBC thought was eminently qualified to be Newsnight’s economics editor. Before Katz took over, by the way. Paxman didn’t seem to mind then.

  • alex_penyfai

The problem is, where can you get unbiased news? BBC uses bias by not reporting on protests and issues where govt says ‘Don’t go there.’

  • Liz

Is the BBC propagandising for or against independence, I can’t tell and you don’t specify.

    • stag

Against. Even Huw is at it.

    • Ali MacKenzie

Against. The incidents are too numerous. Start with Nick Robinson, their chief political correspondent. He should come clean and admit he’s a shameless semi official spin doctor for NO and in his position that is a disgrace. Then look at Kirsty Wark’s interviews…

      • taylor

Nick Robinson, best friend of Craig Oliver, media adviser to David Cameron – ‘we’re all in it together’.

        • ButcombeMan

You are saying Cameron has a media adviser?!

          What he does is planned?

          • The Masked Marvel

Oliver could be a plant working to bring the Tories down by making Cameron do foolish things.

            • ButcombeMan

              Does Cameron need help?

              Maybe Cameron is the plant!

        • The Masked Marvel

When Oliver defected quit to work for Cameron, Robinson claimed on air that he had no idea bout his colleague’s politics. Mind you, Robinson has lied to us in the past about what he knew, and had to apologise for it….

  • Usuckalot

There’s a petition going round to inform the BBC that as of the 18th September, Scots are cancelling their direct debits and payments to them for their Licence fees. I dont fuckin blame them one bit – the Beeb are as bad as Taas or KCTV in Russia or Korea.

  • Nicholas I

    Never trust a Mason.

    • Gilly Fraser

Oh now there I do agree with you! But I will make an exception for this one…

  • Fencesitter

Folks, if they’re agin it, I’m for it…

  • Terry Field

    Propagandised for the Union.

Succeeded in entirely diverting the truth about ISlamic rape of huge numbers of kufar children across Britain and representing it as the failure of a couple of senior police officers and a bunch of social worker jobsworths.

The BBC needs to be deconstructed.

It is an agency for systematic untruth propagation now.

    It is a disgrace.

    • Agrippina

Especially since they are all gainfully employed by the payment of our taxes. I am sick to death of the Beeb. They want to peddle their nonsense, do so, by private means, if folks want to buy this stuff let them do so, but not with my monies.

  • John Smith

What does he have to say about his colleague Snow’s Hamas rants

  • tomthumb015

Amusing and slightly weird how he declares his dislike for the BBC and then moves to Channel 4?? C4 is just as lefty big nanny thinking as the BBC.

    • The Masked Marvel

You missed out why Mason dislikes the BBC. Even though the place is, as Rod Liddle says, about 90% Leftie, it’s not good enough for a Marxist. He was a diehard supporter of the Occupy movement, remember. Not even the BBC could give it enough praise and positive coverage for his taste, which is saying something. Plus there’s the Gaza Flotilla issue.

Mason is allowed to be more partisan on C4, so it’s a breath of fresh air for him.

  • JonBW

    He’s right though.
The Beeb’s Unionist bias has been shocking.

    • Paul Wilson

It will be their undoing how many Scots will pay the TV tax now? Not me they can ram it.

    • Nicholas I

That’s why it’s the BBC, not the SBC, though actually it’s closer to being the KBC.

      • post_x_it

        A Belgian bank?

        • Nicholas I

A reference to the ethnicity, tribal affiliation and satanic ideology of the people who run the BBC.

      • peter

erm Scotland is in Britain and it’s taxes fund it too.
Besides do you really want a national broadcaster that doesn’t tell the truth ?
FOX News mentality has no place in the UK.

  • Alex Dunlop

Paul Mason makes Chairman Mao look like a Thatcherite.

    • Stiofan MacCarthaigh

Judging by the line of the modern Chinese Communist Party, they seem to think Mao was a proto-Thatcherite.

  • Tindalosion

That would be Paul Mason former youth leader for the (relatively orthodox) trotskyist Workers Power group

    • ButcombeMan

      Does anyone take him seriously?

He seems to want to foment trouble.

    • Gilly Fraser

Because people aren’t allowed to change their opinions? I was a former Labour voter – but I’ve certainly changed my opinion!

      • The Masked Marvel

People are allowed to, yes. Mason hasn’t.

  • FootLong

    Sure it´s propaganda.

    • Wessex Man

and to try and bluster and bully the SNP just as they did in the run up to the European Elections to UKip, that didn’t work out as expected did it?
