Celebrating diversity means imposing misogyny

People talk about their commitment to equality and diversity so readily they must assume there is no conflict between the two. The phrase falls off the tongue as if it were an all-in-one package, and people can ‘celebrate diversity’ and support equal rights without a smidgeon of self-doubt. Until, that is, they have to make a principled choice. Then, whether they admit it or not, they find that they can believe in equality or they can believe in diversity, but they cannot believe in both.

If this sounds like the start of a patient exploration of a delicate philosophical distinction, don’t be deceived. There is nothing difficult to understand, and my patience with the double standards of multi-culturalism snapped long ago. If you need me to rehearse the argument again after all these years, here it is, one more time. In a free society you are or should be free to believe what you want. But your freedom to ‘celebrate your diversity’ does not extend to the freedom to force your beliefs on others, unless you can secure a democratic change in the law compatible with the rights of minorities. For instance, you may be a doctor with ethical or religious objections to abortion. No one should force you to abort a fetus. You also have every right to denounce abortion at public meetings or refuse to vote for candidates who support abortion. But you do not have the right to bomb abortion clinics. Nor, to take an example that has concerned the Equality and Human Rights Commission of late, can you demand that women who have had an abortion must sit in segregated seating at the back of your public meeting and submit questions in writing so that men cannot hear their inferior voices.

Hardly anyone has noticed, but last week the commission ruled on an argument that filled the airwaves earlier this year: could Universities UK, a quango, which represents the vice-chancellors of 132 universities and assorted higher education institutes, endorse gender segregation at public events. In a sign of the times, the universities had dressed up their assault on the rights of women in the language of liberalism. They ruled that if allowing men and women to sit where they wished contravened ‘the genuinely held religious beliefs’ of the speaker – who let’s face it will be a religious reactionary addressing a student Islamic Society nine times out of ten – or of the group hosting the event, then women must be segregated. Universities must ‘be mindful to ensure that the freedom of speech of the religious group or speaker is not curtailed unlawfully,’ it announced.

As I said, it is a novel view of freedom of speech that a speaker has the right to impose his views on his audience. But it fits with the totalitarian religious mind. If women can be segregated inside the mosque or orthodox synagogue, they should be segregated outside too. A stern god’s commands recognise no boundaries.

[Alt-Text]

Mark Hammond, the chief executive of the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, had no time for that or for Britain’s sinister academics. It was not against the law to prevent segregation, he said, but against the law to allow it. The universities were breaking the Equalities Act of 2010 – a useful measure passed in the dying days of the last Labour government, which requires public bodies to oppose discrimination. Religious organisations remain exempt – barring the usual exceptions for human sacrifice – but as the commission said:

‘once an event goes beyond religious worship or practice, equality law applies and the courts are likely to consider any gender segregation to be unlawful…A woman who is not permitted to occupy a particular area of the lecture hall because it is reserved for men is disadvantaged because she cannot sit wherever she chooses.’

The universities could not claim that students were segregating voluntarily, he continued, because, ‘it would be impracticable for organisers to attain the necessary certainty that, at every stage, segregation was demonstrably voluntary for all individuals considering or attending’.

It was good to hear a clear statement of basic principles after decades of obfuscation. But those of us opposing the liberal indulgence of theocratic power have our work cut out. It is not just the universities that need to be fought. The Law Society, which represents the 125,000 solicitors in England and Wales, will not withdraw its guidance for Sharia-compliant wills. It is standing by advice which goes far beyond, stating that Muslims citizens of this country are free to leave their money as they choose but should ensure that:

• Male heirs in most cases receive double the amount inherited by a female heirs; and
• Divorced and non-Muslims get nothing at all

In other words, Muslims, who perhaps are at death’s door, will be told by their solicitors that if they want to comply with divine law they must follow the Law Society’s exceptionally conservative version of Sharia, rather than any of the alternatives, and decide that a woman is worth half a man.

I am tired of pointing this out, but not so tired that I will shut up, what is truly outrageous about the white-skinned bureaucrats who endorse discrimination against brown and black-skinned women is that they consider themselves liberals. When I asked Nicola Dandridge, the chief executive of Universities UK, if she would allow the segregation of gays and homosexuals, she appeared shocked that I would consider her capable of such a thought. One Lucy Scott Moncrieff, chair of the law Society’s Equality and Diversity Committee, is leading its excursion into misogynist theology. She sounds quite the feminist, when she complains about the poor prospects for women in city solicitors firms, but when it comes to largely poor Muslim women, without careers in the law to support them…That’s another matter entirely.

I suspect she’s been nobbled by extremists. I cannot prove it because the Law Society will not tell me where its advice came from. But in the case of the universities, its support for segregation followed pressure from an ultra-reactionary organisation called the Islamic Education and Research Academy, whose gruesome views on ex-Muslims, gays, Jews and women you can read at your leisure here.

While supporting the religious right, the ‘liberal’ bureaucracy turns its back on genuine liberals from the ethnic minorities, as I found when I spoke to Sara Khan who runs a campaign group, Inspire, which fights for the rights of British Muslim women. When she publicly opposed Universities UK, Islamists threatened her so violently she had to call the police. To compound her misery, she had to endure lectures from white feminists telling her that she was ‘promoting anti-Muslim prejudice’, when she was a Muslim who had experienced anti-Muslim prejudice and they were not; and articles from the ‘left-wing’ Laurie Penny,  maintaining that Asians who wanted the rights she enjoyed, were the tools of ‘right-wing commentators’.

‘Diversity,’ it appears, does not protect women like Khan. They must do as their ‘community leaders’ tell them. Instead it allows whichever gobby god-botherer is first to make it through the quango’s doors to impose his prejudices as he pleases.

They who go on about liberal values tend to be the most illiberal in their dealings with others. Same goes for those who hark on about democracy. As for the women who put down other women, consider only women in their own image worthy, were they employed by the patriarchal society to do that irksome job for them. Time to get rid of the women who pull up the ladder behind them. They are nothing but the modern version of the last centuries problem.

Why is Diversity ONLY imposed on White countries?

  • Terry Field

Celebrating diversity is a grotesque absurdity, and leads to th lowest common denominator in all aspects of life.
Integration and intolerance of continuing difference should be the mandatory State policy.
All else is an acceptance of cultural collapse.
To be clear, we all know who we are talking about here, don’t we?

  • pole

All this talk about diversity and equality is like new “1984” language. If any state tries to impose equality and reduce diversity it should be called facism. According to Mussolini, creator of facism: “nothing without state, everything according to state”.

“articles from the ‘left-wing’ Laurie Penny, maintaining that Asians who wanted the rights she enjoyed, were the tools of ‘right-wing commentators’.”

I read the linked article in which Ms. Penny plainly says nothing remotely along the lines you suggest. As an admirer of your work I’m sorry to say I think that remark was very unfair.

  • David Whiteknight

    Well…

I for one don’t mind sitting back whilst the left cannibalizes itself once again.

  • http://anonymous-ibiza.blogspot.com Anonymous Ibiza

Pacha in Ibiza thinks it’s cool to allow David Guetta of F**k Me I’m Famous to hang several female dummies from their ceiling. These female dummies are tied at the neck, ankles and wrists in an extremely sadistic way.

    http://goo.gl/aXTkd3

Modern culture, the culture that controls the music, video games & film industries, is far more misogynistic than anything Islam could come up with. Yes, some Muslim women have to wear a burka and that is sad but do any of them have to wear a bikini and shackles while biting down on a gag in a snuff movie pose?
The reason why Muslims are all fired up right now is because of the totally sick music, video game and film industries and their occult Freemason Illuminati insanity they are forcing onto the general public. They see us as evil. They don’t realise we are generally not in control of what is forced upon us and that we are just sheep….lambs to the slaughter almost. We are victims of these industries’ attempts to force their occult religion onto us while the Muslims look on in horror. Sadly, few of us realise what is being done to us.

    • Neil Saunders

Get a grip, Anon – they’re only dummies!

      • http://anonymous-ibiza.blogspot.com Anonymous Ibiza

So in your mind it would be ok to hang dummies of gagged babies from their necks, wrists and ankles.

The average IQ is 100. No wonder this world is in such a mess.

        • Neil Saunders

No, I don’t think it’s OK. I just think that there’s a considerable difference between hanging dummies in public and hanging real human beings (as is the regular practice in, e.g., Iran).

  • Coleridge1

‘Diversity’ and tolerating a primitive death cult that stones women, hangs Gays, persecutes Christians and spreads poisonous hatred about Jews are two entirely different things.

  • Mr Starter

Those of the lower orders who complain about the damage done to their traditional way of life because of mass immigration of people from a different culture into their areas are called racist. They are not up to speed in embracing multi culturalism. But their betters who welcome and embrace this new diversity are guilty of hypocrisy because they are also racist in wanting only multi cultural LITE.They should accept the practices of the incomers in full.FGM,forced ,arranged, child marriages, honour killings, polygamy,
stonings, etc to name but a few of the customs which might seem strange to the indigenous. To be truly multi cultural we must accommodate all different ways of life and not,for example, just enjoy the prospect of a greater choice of food in restaurants.

  • StephanieJCW

It also appears Cohen is spectacularly obtuse and ignorant of what the actual story is regarding sharia compliant wills.

So he should probably refrain from commenting on the matter. The guidance is ONLY in response to those who have been seeking it.

  • Fergus Pickering

Oh God. Look at them. Don’t you want to kick every one of those bums?

    • Godfrey Johnson

Yeah, makes you wonder why Islam has such a homicidal attitude to gays. Maybe homosexuality is er, too close to the bone? ;0)

      • Fergus Pickering

Men who hate gays are usually hating the gay part of themselves. Me, I embrace my gay alter ego. He’s a sweet fellow called Idris.

        • Kitty MLB

I thought his name is Horace, I should keep up
obviously.Dont ask but think of me next Tuesday, will you lovely old chap.
          Farewell.

          • Fergus Pickering

That’s his brother. I shall certainly think of you next Tuesday, dear Kitty. What are you doing then?

            • Kitty MLB

Climbing to the top of Snowdon to scatter the ashes of a
relative. It was nearly Ben Nevis in Scotland, but he decided
on the other instead. He wasn’t Welsh or Scottish but an
              avid mountain climber and walker.
A teacher by profession and he also liked poetry and steam
trains. Another reason for Snowdon, is the fact that his wife
and some other older relatives in their 80s can travel to the top by steam train. And those of us who are climbing are taking a treacherous path..
Thank you for thinking of me on Tuesday, Fergus, old fellow, I am not very good with mountains.

              • Fergus Pickering

Nor me, Kitty. Nor me. Snowdon’s a much nicer mountain.

                • Kitty MLB

Beautiful place, it was Michael who taught me
how to climb, I used to freeze. His father was a
Lib Dem MP in the 30s-found that out only
recently, its funny that sometimes you only
find out stuff once people have gone.

Thinking of taking a little break from blogosphere Fergus( might change my mind)
You and others will forget me and then a mysterious lady turns up..and I can envisage
the disappointment when they realise its only
me..the lady who loves cats, bats and hats.

                • Fergus Pickering

You will never be forgotten, Kitty, but hey, it’s the holidays.

                • Kitty MLB

Indeed, sunshine, scented blooms and Earl
Grey tea in the garden with cake ..

This issue deeply concerns me too. For those who may be interested, there is the One Law For All campaign which hopes to persuade The Law Society to think again.

    http://www.onelawforall.org.uk/

Also, the campaigns and writings of Anne Marie Waters. Anne Marie used to be a member of the Labour Party, but she resigned earlier this year. She criticises the Leftist tendency to support misogynistic Islamist ideology, without even realising it. They do this is the name of multiculturalism.

She’s recently joined UKIP – an amazing turnaround as she’s an ardent feminist and someone you’d normally associate with extreme left wing politics.
Here’s her latest blog article which is well worth reading:

    http://www.annemariewaters.org/blogs/?logout=1

    • GraveDave

An ardent feminist/far left joins UKIP. What mischief is afoot you ask yourself.

      • Catherine Waterman

It will be fascinating to see what happens if she gets elected as a UKIP MP for Basildon next year. UKIP is not my cup of tea, but on the other hand, with Anne Marie Waters on board I might even consider voting again. I’m a confused and despairing non-voter for the time being. In the meantime, all I can do is imagine her as a panellist on Radio 4s Any Questions or BBC’s Question Time – that soft Irish voice belying that iron fist in iron glove!

Thanks to Dr Brave for bringing back my wife, and brought great joy to my family?

Hello to every one out here, am here to share the unexpected miracle that happened to me three days ago, My name is Jeffrey Dowling,i live in TEXAS,USA.and I`m happily married to a lovely and caring wife, with two kids A very big problem occurred in my family seven months ago, between me and my wife so terrible that she took the case to court for a divorce she said that she never wanted to stay with me again, and that she did not love me anymore So she packed out of my house and made me and my children passed through severe pain. I tried all my possible means to get her back, after much begging, but all to no avail and she confirmed it that she has made her decision, and she never wanted to see me again. So on one evening,as i was coming back from work,i met an old friend of mine who asked of my wife So i explained every thing to her,so she told me that the only way i can get my wife back,is to visit a spell caster, because it has really worked for her too So i never believed in spell, but i had no other choice, than to follow her advice. Then she gave me the email address of the spell caster whom she visited.(bravespellcaster@gmail.com}, So the next morning,i sent a mail to the address she gave to me,and the spell caster assured me that i will get my wife back the next day what an amazing statement!! I never believed,so he spoke with me,and told me everything that i need to do. Then the next morning, So surprisingly, my wife who did not call me for the past seven {7}months,gave me a call to inform me that she was coming back So Amazing!! So that was how she came back that same day, with lots of love and joy,and she apologized for her mistake, and for the pain she caused me and my children. Then from that day,our relationship was now stronger than how it were before,by the help of a spell caster . So, was now stronger than how it were before,by the help of a spell caster . • Damaris Tighe

Much as I dislike sharia wills, isn’t the issue a bit of a red herring? Under British law can’t bequests be made to anyone & in any way we like?

    • Catherine Waterman

Hi Damaris, all is explained in a petition to the Law Society by the Lawyer’s Secular Society. This is why they are concerned:

      https://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/the-law-society-law-society-withdraw-your-guidance-legitimising-discrimination-against-women-non-muslims-and-illegitimate-and-adopted-children

The Law Society legitimises discrimination against women, non-Muslims, and ‘illegitimate’ and adopted children.

True, in British law anyone can dispose of their assets as they wish. However, this is subject to restrictions, for example to ensure children and other dependants are provided for.

Regarding children in particular, although the Law Society’s practice note does not change UK law, it certainly discriminates against adopted children and children born out of wedlock. As well as undermining the dignity of these children, it starts to undermine the legal protections rightly afforded to them.

Above all, the new guidance notes promote the legitimisation of discriminatory Sharia law practices as alternatives to egalitarian and secular UK laws.

      • Damaris Tighe

        Thanks for explaining :-)

I didn’t realise that there are restrictions.

  • Hippograd

And whoever would have guessed that mass immigration from the Third World would have these effects? Why have members of the vibrant Muslim and Black communities not brought their love of free speech and deep respect for women’s rights with them from progressive paradises like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Jamaica and Somalia? It’s all a deep, deep mystery — just see how even the wise and far-sighted Mr Cohen failed to anticipate these problems. It’s even possible that they may get worse, as vibrant immigration continues and vibrant communities fund their heart-warmingly high rates of reproduction with help from taxes paid by the so-called “white” so-called “indigenous” so-called “British”.

    • will91

Nailed it. Cannot help but recall that line spoken years ago but more relevant now than ever – “It’s like watching a people, busily engaged in building up their own funeral pyre”

We now have grooming gangs operating in most parts of the country (of course this is all very hush hush on the news, don’t want to threaten the old community cohesion, so better just let 12 year old girls get gang raped). This has been reported in Oxford, Derby, Leeds, Rotherham, Rochdale, Birmingham and Peterborough. You can guarantee it’s happening elsewhere. We also have electoral rigging in Minaret Hamlets. Celebrate diversity.

      • Damaris Tighe

Celebrate diversity without evaluating what these diverse things are & whether we want them.

      • Hippograd

But who agreed with Enoch, apart from a majority of voters? It wouldn’t have been acceptable in a mature democracy to allow them to influence immigration policy. As for electoral fraud: the vibrant Muslim community doesn’t rest on its laurels:

The “higher risk” areas that will come under investigation are: Birmingham, Blackburn with Darwen, Bradford, Burnley, Calderdale, Coventry, Derby, Hyndburn, Kirklees, Oldham, Pendle, Peterborough, Slough, Tower Hamlets, Walsall and Woking

        http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/10557364/Election-watchdog-demands-action-amid-fears-of-Asian-voter-fraud.html

  • http://www.angryharry.com/ Angry Harry

    @Nick

I’m not sure that this is such a big deal; particularly since it helps to undermine the hypocritical Left and the rather backward Muslim attitude to women.

    At little cost.

And men and women are still often segregated these days: e.g. sports, swimming pools, housing etc.

I presume that the male heir gets more money because it is the male heir who is held to be responsible for what is done with it, vis-a-vis the family. And when people are deemed to be more responsible for others, it seems right to give them more resources with which to do this.

Do we not give resources to single mothers?

But more and more Muslim women are going out to work these days, and so I imagine that, before long, those Muslim men will soon realise that things need to change.

  • Chris

    Thanks Nick, keep it coming.

  • Yorkieeye

I’ve always struggled to understand why lefties are such suck ups when it comes to old Muslim men. Women seem to count for nothing and the white lefties are happy to perpetuate the view that women are unclean Jezabels.

    • Neil Saunders

This is because the left only believes in the acquisition and retention of power. They’ll adopt supposedly principled positions (e.g. workers’ rights, feminism) tactically, but they’ll form cynical partnerships with those they perceive to be their enemies’ enemies, even if these people stand 180 degrees against whatever they’re pragmatically espousing for the time being. Remember: in the current hierarchy of “liberal-left” pieties Islam trumps everything else, without exception.

      • Yorkieeye

You are right Neil. My MP Mike Wood is an implacable lefty, a member of every left wing extremist sub set going. but he relies on the Muslim vote in the constituency to get him re-elected. so when it comes to difficult divisions of loyalties, e.g gay marriage, he absents himself from the debate and vote in the House so that he can continue to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds.

  • Godfrey Johnson

Nice one, Nick. Carry on the good fight.

At some date in the future, when Britain has gone so far in the appeasement of Islamic insanity that there’s no going back, somebody will recover your words from a forgotten archive.

That person will curse his or her ancestors for not paying more heed to you and other voices of reason and caring humanity.

    • Nico Stone

You mean in twenty years? I wonder whether they’ll still be able to read by then. A forgotten art, most likely.

      • Godfrey Johnson

Bit sombre, Archibald, but I take your point. If the Muslims have their way then science will no longer be taught in schools (look at evolution-teaching in Brum) and losing the three Rs in favour of woo won’t be far behind.

  • Dutchnick

If every action in the world is by the grace and control of Allah one as to conclude based on empirical evidence that Muslims are currently slightly out of favour.

    • Damaris Tighe

Rational deduction is not their strong suit …

  • beenzrgud

A lot of the far left are people looking for a cause. They find one and the process of indoctrination begins, at that point all good intentions and rationality start to fly out the window. Some have the wit to see it for what it is and quit, whilst others become rabid devotees. They have found their particular brand of religion !
Keep up the good work Mr Cohen. Try not to get too tired, and definitely don’t ever shut up.

    • Neil Saunders

In other words, they’re a cult. That said, there are also cults on the right: e.g. the libertarian disciples of Hayek, Ayn Rand, Murray Rothbard, Robert Nozick, et alios.

Interestingly (not to say catastrophically), our current political/media elites, irrespective of party-political affiliations, adhere to, espouse and implement a syncretic doctrine that marries political correctness in the social sphere with deregulatory crony-capitalism in the economic sphere (in other words, a fusion of the worst elements of left and right ideology).

  • david

women r treated like second class citizens amonngst orthodox jews
why is no one talking about that?

    • Damaris Tighe

Probably because it stays on private property & within private institutions.

      • david

        i agree

      • Liz

        So?

  • Cincinnatus

Day by day, inch by inch, shariah law is coming to dominate Britain.

    • David Robinson

Mind you, if it reverses the anti-male climate in the Anglosphere, I may give it my support.

      • Liz

How many women send rape threats to male politicians? How many women invent vile names for men who have s*x and then regard that as an jumping off point for treating them with disrespect or violence? How many women harass men in while they go about their lawful business? How many women blame men for provoking them to attack them in their tens of thousands each year? How many women have an entertainment industry built on the trade in and utter degradation of men? How many women take up guns and carry out spree killings of men? How many men are afraid to do a long list of things in case they get attacked or killed by women? How many women hog the political sphere, the religious sphere, the business sphere, the film industry? How many women invented a female god, get her representatives ensconced in the legislature and say she can’t be represented by men and women can’t ever be taught by men? How many men have to subsidise women’s bad driving and anti-social and criminal behaviour? You don’t know you’re born.

        • David Robinson

Hey, Spectator, what happened to my reply?

          • David Robinson

Spectator! Have you got a female moderator? Please re-post my reply to Liz.

        • Suzy61

I don’t know ANY woman who would act like this but I don’t know ANY man who would either. As my Mum would say, maybe you are mixing with the wrong crowd?

          • Liz

            Don’t lie Suzy.

        • GraveDave

          You don’t know you’re born.

Well stop giving birth to us then.

      • Damaris Tighe

What you may have said in jest has an element of truth. Faced with on the one hand a touchy-feely culture with few decent male role models, & on the other hand an Islamic culture that’s ‘masculine & muscular’, many young underclass men are choosing the latter.

      • Cincinnatus

Mind you, if it reverses the anti-male climate in the Anglosphere, I may give it my support.

To each his own: I prefer a society where women are allowed to show their faces in public (and even a bit of leg), and where drinking a pint will not get you flogged.

    Political Correctness will eat itself

    I was there before you.

    http://wrinkledweasel.blogspot.co.uk/2009/09/pcwei.html

    and here:

    http://wrinkledweasel-resurgam.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/oh-mandela-give-us-sign.html

    In September 2009 I wrote:

“It has been my contention all along that Political Correctness will collapse due to internal conflicts in its logic, for example, in the world of PC, Gay is good, Muslim is good, but the two cannot peacefully co-exist, providing a very difficult paradox for people who cling to it for emotional support and because they are stupid.”

Multicultural diversity is fine, but foreigners are doing jobs for low pay, the kind of jobs that white folks can’t be ersed to do. Then of course, the lefties scream “exploitation”. – It’s hard to see how someone from some terrible dung heap in Africa, whose idea of luxury is clean water, free healthcare and food, can possibly imagine they are being “exploited”. But of course, lefties demand, not only a right to work, but a right not to work as well.

Bring on the Peoples’ Front of Judea. Or is it the Judean Peoples, Front?

    • Damaris Tighe

The only rights that are not bogus are those that are inherent & don’t require a second party to provide something: the rights to life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness.

‘Rights’ to work, not to work, enjoy a certain standard of living, etc all require second parties to make this possible. They’re not rights at all but claims on other people.

      • http://wrinkledweasel-resurgam.blogspot.co.uk/ wrinkledweasel

        Well put. I agree.

  • global city

Just imagine, Equality of all under the law, that simple, applied context was the perfect vehicle for celebrating diversity and served all well ….and yet the Lefties smashed it on a whole selection of their fetish alters.

It is the ‘progressive’ Left’s fault Nick…. ALL their fault.

  • Fenster1

    Great piece.

  • ADW

BTW I can’t find a report on the EHR Commission report on the Graun. Do you think they missed it, or just that they didn’t want to report something with which they disagreed?

  • ADW

Repeatedly, we get told (i) it’s their culture, and thus in the age of moral relativism we can’t criticise it; and (ii) that although they treat women differently to men, this isn’t necessarily treating them worse (even if they get less money in wills and are paid less attention in courts/tribunals.

Exactly the same arguments were levelled against Emilene Pankhurst and the rest of the Suffragettes. They pointed out it wasn’t their culture, but that of their oppressors, that they’d rather have equal rights for themselves and they could then decide if they wanted to forego some in the name of difference, and that the fact oppression is mandated by some dusty old book and has been around for centuries provides no justification for it.

Laurie Penny is so blinded by anti-male, anti-Western hatred that she prefers to condemn millions of women within these shores to misery, because the alternative – agreeing with a white male somewhere, is even worse.

    • sarahsmith232

      LOL, good comment.
This Laurie Penny, I don’t bother reading her, I presume she’s some Guardian writer kiddie coming out with teenage claptrap, by the sounds of it. So I presume she’s basically a white, kiddie, Dianne Abbott and Yasmin Alhia Brown then, is she? Why have these intelligent females become such spouting daft claptrap prats?
Personally, I’m going after our un-free media for this. Last week the BBC broadcast pro immigration propaganda for 4 nights straight. Really quite unbelievable. They get to limit societies ability to understand what kind of a social type is associated with which kinds of views and the reasons why with these broadcasts.
Brown and his bigot moment is a good e.g again. Brown pre his encounter with Mrs Duffy would never have come in contact with a Rochdale, member of a deeply rooted to her community, Working-Class white retiree. But he heard her accent and her W-Class way of communicating her views and he believed he was already familiar with all of this. He understood exactly what it is that she was – a grotesque.
He didn’t understand her at all. He mistook her Northern (as I say it) ‘littleness’ way of communicating as evidence of her lack of education and ignorance. If he’d have actually been familiar with these types of environments he’d have known that she was displaying Northern humility, not an inability to think intelligently. There’s a cultural pressure on people in these worlds to not ‘put on airs and graces’, don’t ‘betray your class’ (I actually had that thrown at me once – ‘you’ve betrayed your class, you have’). Speaking like a middle-class well educated type would, without any shadow of a doubt, ’round there, be absolutely an e.g of a person putting airs and graces and betraying their class.
Brown, loves to see himself as of a highly, fabulously, of a genetically superior breed, higher order – male couldn’t get that. He was too ignorant and brainwashed to get her, he could only associate her way of speaking and her views with social types that he’s picked up via our un-free, Left dominated media.
BBC was at this with their Barking set Question Time audience a bit back. They employed a plant, a caricature un-employed, alcoholic, stupid, ignorant, East End white that played his part by spouting un-sophisticated, inflammatory, caricature anti-immigration views. How many of the Laurie Penny, Abbott, Alhai-Brown sorts could think on about this? When they watch this they see themselves as members of the superior orders compared to that, due to their superior educational background, due to their superior-ness in general. So really not in their interest to think on about whether this might be a plant designed to brainwash them.
Same whole thing with the Left’s diversity agenda. They believe they understand the blocks that are holding back the benefits of multiculturalism – the white working-class and their general, all round grotesque-ness. But of course, they don’t. These people have zero contact with these worlds, they’re only acquiring their familiarity via the Left-dominated media. Which is filling their heads with nothing but anti white working-class propaganda.
So they become spouting idiocy half-wits, ’cause they’ve long since lost any connection to reality. ‘Course, it becomes so corrosive when it comes to power via the Labour party. There’s no way out of it, the Metro’ Notting Hill set Tories only differ from them in accent, same corrosive ignorance.
White England is being systematically destroyed and there’s no way out of it.

      • Aldabaran

Laurie Penny has her very own entry on Wikipedia. She is a public school and Oxford product. Has her own blog (which nearly won the Orwell Prize) and has worked for the New Statesman, Guardian, and Independent. Currently at the New Statesman. And she picked up a 2.1 degree at Oxford. A smart red cookie.

        • sarahsmith232

I wrote that Abbott, Alhia-Brown and your Penny have become very intelligent idiots. The academics that took the decision to sanction females being ordered to sit at the back will not be un-intelligent people but their logic was incoherent and idiotic.
They spout about society, the only type of opinion worth listening to is one which has been observed and then independently thought through, they’re not in a position to have an opinion that comes from that ’cause they’ve not been doing any of the observing. Apart from via the BBC, backed up by untold ‘research’ undertaken by members of the looney Left academics, which tells them that people who are anti-mass immigration and multiculturalism are all scum, their stupidity and lack of education is the cause of this. Check the academic Matthew Goodwin’s constant attempts to smear Ukip voters with BNP associations. He’s twigged that calling them all thick, uneducated, racists was only increasing their vote so he’s switched to claiming that his . . . er. . . .’research’ proves that they are all so poor they’re almost/actually starving and suffering from the barbarity of the coalitions cuts, so solution – Labour just say ‘we’ll reverse the cuts’. (He’s a left-wing social democrat, so his ‘research’ has been tailored to reinforce his political ideals.)
Check Ummuna on Andrew Marr with his absolutely stupid – ‘it’s the lowest forms of life, I personally prefer the word trash when referencing them, that vote Ukip, these are the people that have still yet to work out how send an email (!!!!) so they need to understand – Labour hears you, we get you, we understand you, your Ukip vote was telling us you us to spend more money on you via the welfare state, vote for us, we can do that for you’.
Oh, I just wonder where it was he got that stupid, absolutely idiotic, set of beliefs from.
So it’s all fine and well having a high I.Q but if you allow yourself to become brainwashed then it counts for nothing.
(BTW – how is being the product of an expensive education evidence of superiorty?)

          • Aldabaran

I certainly don’t think, and didn’t mean to imply, that a posh education is a sign of superiority.

I was saying that despite all the silver spoons she has come out as Red Penny of the NS. Nowt so odd as folks.

            • sarahsmith232

I know, I know, in my post above I write that I didn’t notice your ‘red’ part.
Basically, I need to read things a good few times, you know, have explained to me really very slowly.
Your comment was a good one, I just read it wrong.

        • sarahsmith232

I need to stop doing this, I just fire off responses after reading the original comment only once. Then I read it back and realise I’ve got the wrong end of the stick.
          Didn’t notice the ‘red’ part.
I need to read things slowly, and at least 10 times. So ignore the next comment, shouldn’t have wrote it to you.

          • Aldabaran

            Thanks! :-)

        • insidefilm

oh come on-just because she went to private school and Oxford does not
make her smart…she is a member of the privileged upper middle classes
who has had to do very little to achieve all the things you
list…interestingly while she writes endlessly about female oppression
she very rarely writes about class oppression -if she did she would have
to face up to the very obvious fact that all her ‘achievements’ are a
result of her class background …..

        • Neil Saunders

Why did she get nominated for the Orwell Prize? Services to propaganda?

          • Aldabaran

You would have to ask them that. I agree that the selection does not exactly enhance the reputation of the prize.

  • MikeF

What is the purpose of this irrelevant guff about abortion at the start of this piece? Does Mr Cohen think that before he can criticise the hypocrisy of the ‘liberal-left’ in its attitude to fundamentalist Islam he has to genuflect at one of its other altars as some sort of act of contrition?

    • ADW

Got it in one. Or maybe Cohen is shrewder than we think, and is doing this because if he doesn’t criticise anyone other than Islam he will be declared Islamophobic, and hence persona non grata.

      • MikeF

Not shrewd – realistic in the way you suggest possibly, a bit cowardly in the way I suggest maybe. The basic fact is that the left is now a system of irrationalism one aspect of which is its topsy-turvy vocabulary in which ‘equality’ means preference and ‘diversity’ means conformity. Mr Cohen does recognise that but he can’t bring himself to acknowledge it and act accordingly.

    • global city

He always has to do it. I have pointed out his need to try and retain/regain some street cred with the leftist community, for some bizarre reason.

They never will forgive him though for ‘What’s Left’ which brilliantly exposed the evil at the heart of the ‘Progressive’ movement…..but he will continue trying.

How utterly depressing, but sadly, not surprising. This is the mess we find ourselves in when we apply cultural relativism in a free, democratic society. I wonder who decided that, in the end, the misogynist mullahs must triumph? Triumph over no less than 50% of the population. If our future leaders are the students of today we must hope they will rise up against this nonsense, as they should, but I fear they are already too busy protesting for Palestine, without seeing the slightest bit of irony.

  • sarahsmith232

Brilliant Cohen luvvie, you might be tired out with repeating yourself, but personally I reckon it’s your lone few Left-wing voices that’s starting to kick some sense into these people. Please, please do carry on repeating yourself.

I used to think what Labour unleashed on society was a depressing, vicious, corrosive culture war but I reckon I was wrong on that. There’s hardly anything national about what they set off, it’s been a battle for dominance over a ‘moral universe’. Who represents the interests of the depraved and the ignorant, who is it that’s speaking for the imperilled innocents.

The Left, of course, think it’s all so really very easy to understand. Brown showed in 2005 that he believed his policies on Africa meant that ‘the arc of the moral universe while indeed long will bend towards justice in the months and years to come.’. Blunkett justified their open-door with ‘we were on the side of the angles’. Cable and Abbott can’t understand that they aren’t pro immigration, they’re merely pro a political policy that’s of personal benefit to them, the moment a type of immigration damages their ‘moral universe’ they’re the very first to turn hostile. Cable wants to keep ‘all these foreigners’ out when they’re rich ones. Abbott tried to block affluent, middle-class, white, Western Europeans getting jobs in her Hackney hospital in the 90s.
But they all believe themselves the more intelligent, better educated, more moral upholders of all that’s decent and civil in society. They don’t have much contact with people outside of their little London world so easily fall for the BBC brainwashing about how depraved and disgusting the sections of society are that they see themselves battling against. Check Brown with the bigot moment, he believed she was a disgusting, nasty, hideous grotesque, so must be battled against via policies which destroy it.
Believe these idiot, loony left academics have fallen into the same kind of trap. Setting themselves up as the more powerful protectors of a minority section of society that has to battle against depraved Islamophobia lurking around every corner, even on a campus. These academics ego’s couldn’t allow them to be sensible about this, taking a hardline against a minority group would drop them down to level of a Daily Mail reader, they can’t be that. Their understanding of how they are better than the plebs couldn’t allow for sensible views on immigration and minority groups. So instead they go in for this kind of illogical idiocy.
If you’re reading this Cohen luvvie, it’s all so very easy for these people to dismiss the views of the right, they can’t get away with it when it comes from someone like you. So you have to keep repeating yourself, you’re making a difference. Great article.

    • GraveDave

You talk about wide arcs then go onto angles; so which is it – ‘angels’ or a typo?

      • sarahsmith232

angels, was a typo, surprised anyone would need to ask

  • RaymondDance

    Excellent article.

It’s extraordinary that so many people seem unable to understand the basic principle that’s at issue here. Universities are built and maintained by taxpayers. Equality of access within state-owned institutions is a fundamental right. It is not up to bureaucrats like Nicola Dandridge or religious organisations to decide to grant privileges within the institutions to one group over another. If they want to do that they must use private premises.

    • Damaris Tighe

      Exactly.

    • GraveDave

Quite a few of these universities tend to vote in Muslims as leaders of their student unions. Suppose it makes them feel they’re doing their bit for diversity. But it should be made clear, you’re here to represent the union.
      Not Muslims.

      • Karen Lawrence

Since it is the students that vote and not ‘the university’ I really don’t see how that can be the case.

I don’t think the average student would care about it’s SU ‘appearing diverse’.

  • Richard Sanderson

    Superb article.

Great to see the likes of Laurie Penny called out again. Her airbrushing of the role liberal Muslims groups, Muslim individuals, groups representing people of colour (Blackhall Sisters), etc. played in the campaign against gender segregation, only for her to suggest it was orchestrated by some shadowy far-right EDL-type group, was appalling.

    She never apologised.

    • GraveDave

      Laurie Penny is a nutcase.

      • CharleyFarleyFive

Question is, why does anyone take any notice of her?

              • Fergus Pickering

    • global city

everything she does is based on the need to impress herself with her ability to think up contrary points….even if they are utterly absurd ones.

    • Tom Allalone

No but the article has been tampered with. The last two lines read

This article was amended to draw attention to the fact that many
Muslim and Asian women were involved in the “gender segregation”
      protests

Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia

  • The Masked Marvel

Ah, Nick, you’ve fallen into the trap and assumed that the people who want to enforce this care about anything other than their own inner righteousness. Laurie Penny is a classic example. If she thinks she’s given even the slightest ground to someone she perceives to be an ideological opponent (read: evil), then her entire self-worth is called into question. Mustn’t have that. It’s the same with Warmists or Socialists or Progressives. These people are so intellectually insecure that the only way to maintain the facade is by trying to enforce 100% compliance on all issues, across the board, no unapproved thoughts allowed, no quarter given, regardless of whether or not consequences end up the opposite of the results they claim to desire.

If that sounds rather fascist or totalitarian, one can be sure it’s meant to be.

    • Peter Vintner

You’re right about Laurie Penny, for sure.
But the rest of your diatribe sounds, to use your own phrase, “intellectually insecure”. It’s just one tedious, thought-free ad hom.

      • The Masked Marvel

Thought-free? You disagree, so it’s tedious. The author was asking how those who demand we “celebrate diversity” can end up enforcing the kind of rights violation they claim to oppose. I was pointing out that their priorities are more internal than external. I could write a full, more to the point article if you like, something not as appropriate for a comments section, but am unsure where it would be published.

        • Peter Vintner

The “author asked”. But the people he’s asking about don’t celebrate diversity.
Otherwise I think you’re misrepresenting your own previous comment.

          • John Dub

            Oi Pete stop trolling…
The point is the abuse of the language under the left.
            Diversity means conformity
            Equality means hierarchy..
            and so on…

            • Peter Vintner

Oi Johnny my name’s Peter, not Pete, and I’m not trolling.
              All this
“under the left” garbage is, well, garbage. It’s always been garbage.
The world isn’t binary “left” and “right”, and language abuse of any
type isn’t exclusive to any political group or category of person.
Exactly the same type of abuse of language occurs right across the
political spectrum, depending upon the policy.
But painting all people of the “left” (or “right”) with the same brush of broad generalisations is just as idiotic and unthinking as the subjects of the article above.

  • Sagar K

This is not the central topic but this statement:

“For instance, you may be a doctor with ethical or religious objection to abortion. No one should force you to abort a fetus.”

What if its a complication with the pregnancy, and an abortion is necessary? And the doctor on call refuses on ethical/religious grounds, resulting in severe complications by the time an alternate arrangement is made? Isn’t that grounds for medical negligence?

    • global city

They already accommodate that, as you will know.

    • Lorelei Lee87

Isn’t that what happened in the tragic death of that east Indian woman in Ireland?

      • Moob

No but it was spun to appear so.

  • Dar4id

There is another dishonesty here in saying that we don’t do segregation based on séx in the west.

So all toilets are now to be unisex? All sports, from schools to professional athletes must compete without segregation? All single-sex schools to close?

A more honest answer is simply to say that we simply should the British way of doing things first, and stuff the rest if you don’t like it.

    • TimboX

If you truly can’t see the difference between having toilets for men and women then there is no hope for you. I wouldn’t subject any women to the horror of me getting my wang out at the urinal. And I often get stage fright, which would be made 100 times worse with a female audience. Nevertheless, there are many small toilets that are both male and female.

Segregated education benefits the girls. It’s for their benefit so they can excel. Boys dominate classrooms and this is detrimental to the girls learning experience.

You seriously want co-ed rugby teams? Come on. There are good reasons, why these are the way they are, even though there are some arguments against.

But segregation in a public teaching institution is anathema to all decent people’s views. What if these religious extremists didn’t want black people or gays to attend? Would you support that? They are trying to implement this at our universities, a placed of supposed higher learning. Where all students must be allowed to participate equally and fairly.

      • Dar4id

Freedom of association should be the greater right as far as I’m concerned. Nkaplan’s post above sums it up well.

        • TimboX

I don’t believe this has anything to do with freedom of association, see my post further below.

I would have no difficulty in joining an all male gentleman’s club for example.

          • Nkaplan

But surely freedom of association means a group of people should be free to determine its own terms of membership (e.g. to say women are allowed to participate so long as they sit only in a particular section of the meeting room)?

            • Damaris Tighe

I think property rights trump freedom of association. Whoever owns the room has the last say. A publicly funded body such as a university is surely duty bound to enforce the majority culture. A mosque is entitled to do as it pleases as it’s private premises.

      • trotters1957

You seem to mistake the readers of the Spectator as sentient beings, most of the people on here are just grumpy old men whiling away the years in the back garden waiting for the Grim reaper.
Don’t waste your time on this load of Colonel Tufton Buftons.

    • Andy959

That’s separation, not segregation. Neither group is being disadvantaged.

      • Dar4id

Neither group is being disadvantaged to be being told to sit on one side of the lecture hall and another on the other side either.

        • Nkaplan

Although, according to Nick’s quote from the Equalities Commission one would think this the worst kind of disadvantage imaginable:

“A woman who is not permitted to occupy a particular area of the lecture hall because it is reserved for men is disadvantaged because she cannot sit wherever she chooses”

O tempora! O mores! One can only imagine what happens when these delicate flowers attend the theatre to find they have been allocated specific seats (the horror!) – leaving a vast array of hundreds of seats in which they ‘cannot chose to sit if they chose.’

          • pointlesswasteoftime

Fatuous – you get to choose your seats for a theatre when booking from what is left available – not what is left dependent upon to your genitalia.

            • Nkaplan

The point was merely to illustrate that it is not exactly a devastating blow to find that certain seats in a large hall will not be available to you as and when you desire. The quote from the commission made out that the very fact that one could not sit ‘wherever one choses’ was some terrible disadvantage that required legal intervention to remedy.

              • pointlesswasteoftime

No, it pointed out that doing this based on sexual identity was discrimination.

                • Nkaplan

That is little more than a tautology – to treat women differently because they are women is clearly discrimination based on sexual identity, that is so by definition. That was not all that was said, it went on to say:

Such a woman is “disadvantaged because she cannot sit wherever she chooses” and that this called for legal remedy. That is a substantive claim. It strikes me as an absurd one given that being unable to ‘sit where one choses’ is about as minor a grievance as it is possible to imagine.

It should also be pointed out that the policy separates men and women, which is to say then men in question could also not sit ‘wherever they chose.’ Just as the women were prevented from sitting where men were, men were prevented from sitting in the area for women. The fact that only the one was complained of is a good indication that this whole thing is politicised garbage.

                • pointlesswasteoftime

Yes, one is so disadvantaged by being at the front of any audience. That’s why front row seats are so cheap….Right?

You’re right, it is a minor grievance, but notice the words “she” in the sentence you quoted. This is about targeted action against females. In a university, or any public space, this is just plain wrong. I don’t understand why you are picking an argument over it.

                • Nkaplan

Not for any particular reason – the quote just tickled me, it being so typical of the liberal left’s general lack of perspective.

        • Damaris Tighe

Although I dislike separate seating I can live with men on one side, women on the other, as long as no one has to stand because there are no ‘right’ seats left. But women (or men) sitting at the back – no way!

          • David Robinson

Stops them nicking the chips . . .

  • CharleyFarleyFive

Anything more than generalisations and stereotyping too much for you eh?
Would it be ok for me presume all such intellectual laziness is the preserve of right-wing reactionaries?
      Thought not.

Frankly I can’t see much to choose between the intellectual laziness of your comment and the idiocy of those who think misogyny is ok if disguised as “diversity”. Stupidity and woolly thinking aren’t confined to, or the exclusive right of, any one political group.

      • TimboX

True, but if you look at a lot of far left political ideologues, it is the epitome of stupidity and woolly thinking.

        • global city

Anything more than generalisations and stereotyping too much for you eh?

              • Peter Vintner

Irony is too much for you obviously. Keep up.

            • global city

Most of the racist groups are actually socialistic/authoritarian. Community, kith and kin, solidarity, et, the ideological ties are seemless…..It all depends what game you want to play with spectrum politics.

Having said that, you must admit that most significant dogma-laden initiatives are those of the Left? Surely you must?

              • Peter Vintner

I don’t think I agree with you at all there. Maybe you’d like to provide some examples.

The French FN, British EDL, UKIP, BNP. Italian Lega Nord, the old Italian Fascist party, Dutch Party for Freedom etc. Far Right of the Republican party in the US… I wouldn’t describe any of them as “socialistic.
And I’m not sure what could be more dogmatic than the current Tories (privatisers of everything, to the benefit of their friends and families). Oddly and ironically, the biggest recipients of “socialist” handouts in recent years, by far, are the banks – champions of the Right and unfettered free market capitalism.
So, yes, it does depend on what game you want to play.

                • global city

That’s because the fundamental idea in your head is that socialists are good guys, and that good guys precisely tally with your personal ideals, which is amazing when you think about it!

Just look at the disparate group of political parties you have limped together. Show me how their economic ideas tally or their social ones for that matter. Learning, say, the social aspects of Widers policies and what you ASSUME they are may help to enlighten you a bit. I assume that because he is anti Islamic he must be a xenophobe, homophobe and misogynist… because that’s what you have been brainfucked into thinking?

            • Terry Field

              Indeed. Right is right.

      • CharleyFarleyFive

Succinct and to the point. Pseudo intellectuals may struggle with such economy of language but where appropriate…

      • Nkaplan

“Stupidity and woolly thinking aren’t confined to, or the exclusive right of, any one political group.”
True – but it does seem particularly prevalent on the supposedly liberal left.

        • Peter Vintner

Care to define what is meant by “liberal”? It’s fairly obvious it’s meant as an insult (if rather tired and clichéd), as if “liberal” were intrinsically a bad thing? A dictionary might help.

Here’s a definition – “favourable to or respectful of individual rights and freedoms.” From this you can see that Nick Cohen’s piece above is about something that is, in fact, the antithesis of “liberal”, whether of the “right” or “left”.

And as for the “right” and “left”, well the world just isn’t binary no matter how hard we try to make it so. There are as many flavours of “right” and “left” as there are people who claim to have a political or philosophical view. Woolliness of thought is a human trait, not a political one.

          • Nkaplan

I was being ironic. By liberal I actually meant illiberal (largely because I could not be bothered to right the qualifier ‘supposedly’ before the word in question) – thus I was adopting (and mocking) a typical tactic of the left of using a word to mean precisely the opposite of what it actually means.

A bit like how they use the word ‘progressive’ to mean ‘a retrograde ideology/ belief system which, if properly implemented would lead to the destruction of freedom, property and society. Or when they say ‘greedy’ to mean ‘the unwillingness to see the government grabbing an ever greater proportion of people’s wealth because one would prefer to let people use their own money as they decide (including for charity)’, or when they say ‘generous/compassionate’ to mean ‘the belief that the government should confiscate more of other people’s money to spend on projects I favour (especially the ones benefiting the industry in which I work)’. Etc. etc

  • Nkaplan

“It was not against the law to prevent segregation, he said, but against the law to allow it.”

Neither should be against the law at all. The law (and the Equality and Human Rights Commission in particular) should have nothing to say on such matters, which should be for us, as free subjects, to decide amongst ourselves without constant interference of know-nothing do-gooders. If an organisation wants to have a policy of segregation then it should be free, in a free country, to do so. Likewise the rest of us should be free to refuse to attend any such segregated meeting on the grounds of the said segregation.

As for the incompatibility between (enforced) equality and (enforced celebration of) diversity – easy solution, reject them both as the ill-thought out, illiberal, nonsense that they are.

    • TimboX

I disagree. There is a difference between universities and religious groups/social clubs that separate men and women. Because ultimately, people are free to join and leave clubs and religions (even though there may very well be serious repercussions not to in some communities).

But there is a difference if you are being denied the same level of education, which you have paid for, based on your gender, by not being able to attend certain lectures and seminars.

It’s is also not viable for women to leave their universities to protest as you suggest. You don’t get a refund if leave, you know. And then there are all the years spent at that institution being wasted.

      • Liz

Somebody should tell The Spectator which constantly short-changes its female subscribers with sexist articles which incite its misogynist commenters.

    • The Masked Marvel

You might be conflating a case of people having the freedom to decide amongst themselves where to sit with a case of some people forcing it on others who do no share their belief. There’s a difference, and in this case it’s not an Islamic (or orthodox Jewish) organization, and not the kind of religious gathering which is protected by law.

Mind you, this particular case is more about the hypocrisy of those involved than anything else.

    • GordonHide

This is a sure route to the tyranny of the majority and the consignment of minorities to second class status or worse. Well administered countries have written constitutions whose principal objective is the avoidance of the tyranny of the majority. The most important job of any government is the protection of the citizenry. That means protection from external threats, protection from governmental tyranny and protection from internal persecution by NGOs and criminals.

  • Dar4id
