World Cup diary: Here’s why we need Wayne Rooney…

Greg Dyke was right with that throat-slitting gesture, when England’s world cup group was announced. Seeing the quality in some of the other groups gives you an indication of how much harder we have it. Which isn’t to say we’d have breezed through, mind. But I suspect we would have beaten Russia and South Korea, who played like two mid table Championship sides. Which is pretty much what the Koreans are, really. Incidentally, my wife remarked of the Koreans, as the teams lined up, “they’re not lookers, are they?”

So: tomorrow. What do we do with Mr Potato Head? Put him in the centre or leave him out altogether? I’m tending towards the latter, given his fairly awful performance against Italy. But then, he did provide the killer pass for our only goal. Whereas Gerrard’s passing was abysmal. Dan Hodges believes we’re trapped in a narrative (ahem) which reveres Gerrard and loathes Rooney. I’m not sure there isn’t some truth in that. Anyway, we need someone to kick Suarez hard, on his bad knee, in the fourth minute.

I am Carolina Alegre from London UK. I am a woman who play casino to make a living ever since my husband died five years ago. As you all known casino game is a game of luck, sometimes you win while sometimes you lose. I played sometimes I win sometimes I lose. One day a friend of mine in Texas USA introduced me to a good spell caster by the name Dr Ogun, in which I contacted him and he casted a spell and ordered me to go and start winning as I play. I want to use this wonderful opportunity to thank Dr. Ogun who helped me to win all the games that I played. I won(£33,035,323), I have spent so much money playing this games for many years,I asked myself sometime when will I win huge amount of money? it came to pass when I contacted the great spell caster Dr ogun. He assured me that my request will be granted once he cast the lucky winning spell I believed and really I played and won straight five games resulting to thirty three million, thirty five thousand, three hundred twenty three pounds, right now i am short of words, I am a multimillionaire and I win invest so wisely and continue playing and winning. Dr ogun is the best man on earth to work with. My friends, please do contact him in his email: Dr.ogunspellhome3@hotmail.com for your own lucky winning spell.

Rooney has a grim record of looking after his health.

    He has smoked extensively.

This is treating the punters who pay his enormous wages, with contempt.

It is not the behaviour of a world class sportsman.

He does not have the sort of physique that will give him a long playing career. Smoking will finish him early.

Drop him and play an energetic youngster.

This is a GREAT news from Liverpool!

A significant amount of suspected class A drugs were recovered from one of the houses raided by Merseyside police this morning.

They were taken to police stations were they will be interviewed by detectives.
    Original story

Where will you get your meds now.?

  • Lungfish66

I predict Rooney to score from the port bow and England to win 2-1 at 6/5. I know its irrelevant but when watching Casino Royale with her daft husband Jane Goldman commented ‘Is that some especially expensive Swiss ball clinic?” as Daniel Craig appeared with a tartan rug wrapped around his knees after having his knackers bashed with a piece of knotted rope. Sorry, I’v just watched Kick-Ass. ‘ll go to bed now.

    You leave Suarez’s knee alone!

    Roll on next season.

    • Pier66

      no way!

  • Hexhamgeezer

Can we not have a World Cup Dairy where the next opposition’s milk products are reviewed? According to the Interweb there was a Uruguay v Brazil naval Battle of the Cheese where the Uruguayans used Dutch cheese for cannonballs.

  • Mynydd

    All England need is a couple of positional changes;
Gerrard to right back, right back behind the goal.
Rooney to left back, left back in the dressing room.

  • allymax bruce

Hey! Rod, your-lot let me down for a nice little earmer. I had Holland to beat Spain, Germany to beat Portugal, USA to beat Ghana, and England to draw with Italy. I was on a 30/1 bet, but your-lot let me down. Are all the England players Tories?
“Don’t trust the Tories” (Alex’ Salmond).

    • dado_trunking

I wish the Scottish commenters would stop interfering with their commentary on the performance of the English team at the World Cup. Rooney is in a right mess right now because of it.

    • Baron

That’s the English for you, allymax, they lost deliberately to rub your Scottish nose in it.

    • Lungfish66

you daft Catholic – why don’t you try and get a fucking job?

    • Lungfish66

I put a bet on Holland to win six months ago.

      • Pier66

you means that you put your money Holland win world cup?
mmh I have lot of doubts…
brazil, argentina, germany , france, all strong mafia federation..poor little dutch diamonds are finish to buy some ref at world cup?

    • Pier66

SEEMS Milllwalllll on line …londoners for sure!

  • Paul Owen

Gerrard completed more passes (62) than any other England player. I know you are paid to be provocative and a contrarian, but you are plain wrong about this and the England performance. Maybe we have low expectations these days, but I and many others thought they played well. Rooney deserves the criticism, but he did also provide a superb pass for our only goal.

    • P.chi ki wan

Pirlo completed more passes than the entire England midfield put together.

      • Pier66

you need a new glasses for xmas I will send you a good one

too many ingerlund fans seem to be disappointed that players aren’t lofting balls into empty channels and other long ball stuff.

I thought they played well against Italy the other night.

    • Pier66

you know what ? all those provocative GENTLEMANS are about many years of defeats, pains cry every saturday in trouble.. from OUR GREAT LIVERPOOL..

  • Jez

I’ve got Iran and Russia in the Work Sweep-stake.

Russia’s goalie was rubbish and looked as though he couldn’t be arsed…. Capello showed some managerial class when he had to counter the South Korean Goal with a complete change to the team dynamic.

    Four factors with Russia;

    1. Were the Russian players told by Capello to take a back burner and not risk anything, to remain strong for the Belgium clash?
    2. Was the humidity and heat a cause for almost instant exhaustion?
    3. Are their highly paid, superstar Russian players as spoilt and uninterested in something as distracting as the measly World Cup, as some of our players seem to be?
    4. pushing the boat out, i may not win my sweep-stake with Iran & Russia.

    • Pier66

      Jez have a break please
we dont care about russian and iran at all

      • Jez

        Who’s ‘we’?

  • Roger Harris

England’s – spectacularly uncultured – game is kick and rush. We’re famous for it.
    Rooney didn’t rush.

    • tjamesjones

yeah, what an uncultured pass that was from Rooney for Sturridge’s goal! rubBISH!

      • P.chi ki wan

Possession stats,Italy. 63% England 37%..You cant play football without the ball.

        • tjamesjones

Ah the old possession fetish. Here’s a stat for you P: Possession stats for Spain v Holland. Spain 63.9% Holland 36.1%.

Seems you can play football without the ball.

          • P.chi ki wan

Yes,but half the Holland side didn’t go down with cramp.

            • tjamesjones

So you’re right, but just not or the reason you first said, right?

              • P.chi ki wan

Agreed,my point should have been that England lack the nous and ability to control games.

                • tjamesjones

Yes, my interpretation is that they lack the killer finish. Against Italy, how many decent chances did England create – it must have been a dozen: from sterling in the opening minutes, to rooney on 63 minutes and beyond. after Italy’s 2nd goal England really looked very much like they could score but they just couldn’t stick the knife in. Whereas the dutch took their chances. Italy did enough to win, as is their style, hard to tell how many they could have scored if they needed more.

                • Pier66

and there was 2 penalties on welbeck and SG we deserve a draw…

        • Forest Fan

Spain had most of the posession against Chile tonight but still got battered.

          • Pier66

spain are out I’M HAPPY FOR ALL THE NEXT YEAR!

          • P.chi ki wan

Not in the game I watched, they did have slightly more possession, but that is the nature of their game.

        • Pier66

sometimes possesion doesent matter important score goals!

    • Pier66

England’s – spectacularly uncultured – game is kick and rush. We’re famous for it….
oh my dear …you need to back at college first lesson
WE RULE THE WORLD FOR SO LONG TIME THAT WE FED UP!

  • maurice12brady

Words of a first-rate strategist Rod — & to think they look abroad for coaching material!

  • dado_trunking

Losing two games at group stage means you’re out, Rod.

    • tjamesjones

you know that’s not true, right? Top team 3 wins, other 3 all 1 win 2 losses.

      • dado_trunking

True, but now you are outlining a three in one chance in a thousand to one probability.
        I don’t do God.

  • rugby god

alternatively, take a leaf out of the England rugby squad and put the third choice pivot players and those wanting to make a game of it, like they did in test 1 v. the AB’s. And also maybe play to win?

  • P.chi ki wan

Leave Gerrard And Rooney out,Gerrard is too predictable and Rooney might be better deployed as an impact player.England woud have had half the team suffering with cramp playing in the conditions Russia and South Korea did, probably conceding goals towards the end of the second half.

    • Pier66

ah ok you need also a DOCTOR! I will call 999 for you give me the address please

      • P.chi ki wan

        Your madness is strangely amusing!!

  • Marquess of Salisbury

If we can’t overcome Uruguay then there’s not much point in us being there in the first place. The fact is that Italy’s first goal was a basic training-ground manoeuvre easily combated they couldn’t believe their luck when thy scored from that corner.

  • alabenn

We need Wayne Rooney so that we have a ready made excuse, if we topple at the first hurdle.

  • anyfool

I have a better idea, instead of being humiliated almost every time the so called top players like Rooney and the Liverpool saddo plays, lets drop the top players and throw in young unknown players, then if humiliated at least the team would put some heart and effort into the humiliation.

    • allymax bruce

Q: What is the difference between Bill Clinton and England striker Wayne Rooney?

      A: Clinton can score.

      • RobertC

        Not at both ends, surely?

      • Pier66

Clinton can score…and many more especially under the table!!!
YNWA AND TORY ALL THE WAY

    • Baron

you’ve got it, anyfool, the youngsters have nothing to lose, the ‘stars’ live under the illusion they’re stars, have to shine, more often than not disappoint.

And another thing: Did you see the Aussies tonight? They harassed, closed down, closed down a harassed, and almost engendered a shock.

      • anyfool

        Did not see, at work.
Rooney claims he has been putting in extra training this week to ensure he is fit enough for the next match.
He should already be fit, you cannot put in the massive efforts needed to get fit in a couple of hours between games.
If the manager plays him, he will prove he is as dimwitted as Rooney.

One can only hope everything I have said is baseless, but I am not holding my breath on that score.

        • Pier66

breath breath my dear and watch if you want to

    • Pier66

GREAT IDEAS, you should ask for get the England Job next time

  • Kitty MLB

Oh come on Rod. If you want more ladies to watch what you
call ‘The Sport of Gentleman’ it should be Cricket , but never mind!
Then that egotistical baboon without wit, charm or talent
will not do that.He doesn’ look as if he has the energy to
schelp himself off the sofa let alone kick a ball.
And if you or the boys here say:
Who cares as long as we win, then I might add that ladies,
since the the time of Pandora( she with the jar) have been
    a lucky charm.

  • arnoldo87

    “Gerrard’s passing was abysmal”

Quite – he can be inspirational, but passing never was his strong point.

    • global city

      It used to be.

anyway. Gerrard will retire at the end of this tournament and that will give Henderson the right to claim that position for himself for the next decade. I have been completely won over by him over the last year. I think Liverpool lost the title when Henderson got himself sent off, rather than when Gerrard slipped.

      • Pier66

Gerrard will retire at the end of this tournament…well that’s not sure
it’s up to SG, BR will ask him to stay, I will ask him to stay for NEXT CENTURY! I know that will be a delight for more then half country fans , cause we DESTROY AND HUMBLED all the Premier Division clubs just have a look to the score it’s embarrassing
YNWA AND TORY ALL THE WAY

        • global city

Oh, I did not mean from Liverpool, but I think he will retire from the England set up.

I think he has two more years at LFC

          • Pier66

you think he will retire from the England set up,
and are you Happy with that?

            • global city

Yes. Liverpool will get longer out of him if he does. Also, it will give Henderson and extra season or so to reach Gerrard’s levels of skill and football knowledge.

Being scouse means that England’s needs are not top of my footballing concerns! :)

    • Pier66

passing never was his strong point…you talking about gerrard…
oh my dear I feel sick!

    • Pier66

Arnoldo you need a doctor a specialist ones for you asap

  • James Morrison

England’s group is hardly the strongest. There are two that are obviously weaker (the groups involving France and Belgium), but there are two that are clearly stronger (the groups involving Germany and Spain).
Italy are a good, but by no means great side. Uruguay are clearly weaker than they were in 2010 due to ageing of two key players (Forlan and Lugano) who have not been replaced, and the injury to Suarez is a devastating blow. Costa Rica are a nippy underdog at best. If England can’t get out of this group the fault will be in themselves, not their stars.

    • GenJackRipper

Italy is one of the strongest sides in the tournament. They just don’t go for 4-0 in the group stage; they save that for the finals.
It’s always the same thing. Remember 2006.

      • James Morrison

Still think that Italy is one of the strongest sides in the tournament? Or did England just allow them to look good?
