One member of Team Gove is a Theresa May fan

Sarah Vine is famed for using her column in the Daily Mail to share embarrassing personal anecdotes about Michael Gove (often involving his underpants) and to offer deeply unhelpful advice to the Tory government. Today’s article is a case in point; it says that David Cameron’s women problem is ‘the biggest hurdle the Tories face’. The wife of the Education Secretary adds: ‘as my husband is fond of saying, “Happy wife, happy life”. And Mrs Electorate isn’t happy.’

And Vine laid it on thick for Theresa May; suggesting that the Home Secretary ‘looks more and more like the true heir to Margaret Thatcher…. whose tractor beam glare makes Anna Wintour’s seem positively Bambi-esque’. High praise indeed, but all the more so because Ms May is Mr Gove’s foremost Tory rival (at least in parliament…): the rows between the two at Cabinet have made it into the papers. Mr Steerpike wonders if ‘him indoors’ agrees that Theresa May is the ‘true heir’ to Maggie?

Vine also reports that some Tories describe Ms. May’s special advisor Fiona Cunningham as ‘brilliant but completely terrifying’. Team Gove has been on the sharp end of that particular brand of brilliance. One wonders which ‘colleague’ known to Vine dreamt up that quote.

Theresa May is heir-apparent to David Cameron; Gove cannot match the excellent work and loyalty of Theresa. Whether Theresa would want the PM job, will only become ‘apparent’ after David Cameron guides his Conservative Party to 2015 G.E. victory, and after the EU ‘in/out’ vote in 2017.

Possibly the most telling evidence that the Tories are a broken dysfunctional party is the speculation that Theresa May is seriously being considered as leader of the Tories. Putting aside the historical precedent (no party leader who boasts solely the Home office of the great offices of state in their CV has ever risen to Prime Minister in over 100 years) and putting aside that she has failed abjectly in what politically was her primary task (to sort out immigration) has anyone considered that Theresa May of all senior politicians is the nearest thing to a walking Spitting Image puppet in contemporary politics (and there is considerable competition). A caricature of a politician who dresses like a court jester and has serious issues representing her department accurately in parliament and that’s not even getting into the nasty party debacle, the fall out with the police, the Snoopers Charter etc etc.

Clearly Sarah Vine is intent on destroying the Tory Party…..

It was a relief when Vine decamped to the Mail and the ‘my husband Michael’ column ended. If only that ersatz Lynda Lee-Potter, Caitlin Moran, and the lame, whinging Robert Crampton would move there too . . .
