When Tony Benn was being interviewed for admission to Oxford, the Admissions Tutor asked his father’s occupation, and when the attempt was made to fob him off with “journalist” or something, ostentatiously mouthed “Peer of the Realm” while writing it down on the form.
If any official form asked for his occupation, my father would always answer ‘Gentleman’. His view was that what he did for a living was nobody else’s business.
